The actual impact of calorie labels on takeaway orders revealed
A recent study found that calorie labels on online takeaway menus rarely influence consumer choices, with 77 per cent of adults in England not noticing the information during their last purchase.
Of those who did notice, 71 per cent reported that the calorie information did not affect their food selection, with taste and price being the most important factors.
The research indicated that individuals under 35 and those with higher Body Mass Index scores are more prone to ordering takeaways frequently.
Respondents suggested that alternative interventions, such as traffic-light labels, more healthy menu options, and 'buy one get one free' offers on healthier dishes, would be more effective.
Experts concluded that calorie labels alone are insufficient to tackle obesity, advocating for systemic changes to make healthy food choices simpler and more affordable for consumers.
